Lung cancer remains one of the most frequently encountered cancers associated with high mortality. Recent advances in lung cancer imaging have impacted significantly on the practice of thoracic surgery. This article is a personal reflection on how these advances affect my thoracic surgery practice and will focus on 3 areas - subcentimetre lung nodules, positron emission tomography, and cervical ultrasound as staging tools. Further development in lung cancer imaging promises to bring radiologists and thoracic surgeons even closer in the diagnosis and treatment of this dreadful disease.
